Although my results might no be applicable to every PC configuration and USB brand, I think it might be worth to take this into account if you decide to keep local folders in a USB. Thunderbird 3 was taking a longtime (several seconds) to execute any normal comand, such as deleting an email, or very longtime to move emails or compact mailboxes.
